Just got Vavoom up and running using the full version Heretic wad - Wow, what a blast from the past! Great to be able to actually play the game on Windows 2000 over TCP/IP!

Still, the engine seems to be very unstable, and it crashed on a number of occasions. It never seemed to randomly crash, but instead would sometimes crash after a significant event, like a frag, turning someone into a chicken, or a telefrag. I'd say the game would crash about every other time when turning someone into a chicken, perhaps 1 in 10 for a frag, and almost every time for a telefrag. Only one of the computers would lock up, generally the computer of the person who got fragged or chickened, requiring a force-quit of Vavoom.

One other strange thing which we noticed was that doing a search for multiplayer games doesn't work. The name of the server shows up on a search, but trying to connect that way doesn't work - we were only able to connect by specifying the IP address.

While I'm on the topic of bugs, I also noticed that some textures were a little bit screwy, such as sky textures not being properly aligned (probably nothing you can do about it) and that in large open spaces with lots of items (like E3M8), the items seem to shimmer - that is they are sometimes there, and then disappear for a second when you turn your head. Strange.

All in all though, very very cool. Can't wait to get more people playing and load up some of our old levels we used to play 5/6 years ago!

--Tim
